On May 6, 2024 at 12:45 PM local time, Liliya Ianovskaia summited Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest mountain, at age 64.
Makalu, in eastern Nepal near the Tibet border, is a steep, isolated pyramid known for difficult mixed terrain near the summit. The summit push went through deteriorating weather; summit photos show Liliya holding the Belarusian historic flag and the Canadian flag in a storm.
It was her eighth eight-thousander.
