On April 20th, Haliburton Highlands Health Services (HHHS) announced their decision to close the emergency department of the Minden Hospital, one of the busiest rural hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The hospital is located minutes from a busy regional highway, and in the heart of Haliburton County, the population of which triples every summer due to cottagers and tourists who flood the area to enjoy Ontario’s nature, lakes, and hiking trails.

As a mountaineer, I know too well that nature can be very unpredictable. The unexpected happens, an when it does, every minute counts when it comes to saving lives. Quick access to safe medical care is crucial in times of crisis.

As a part-time Highlander myself, I am deeply concerned about the planned closure of Minden ER. This decision will put countless lives at risk and will have far-reaching consequences. It is essential that we come together and find solutions to ensure continued access to safe and reliable healthcare and ensure wellbeing of our community. #mindenmatters #savemindenhospital #accessiblehealthcare #ruralhospitalclosure #savinglives
